As part of United Talmud Torah Language Arts Program, Grade 5 students spearheaded a fundraising campaign to support the international foundation ‘Yelé Haiti’ that was founded by rapper Wyclef Jean. The $1200 that were raised will send 20 children to school for a year.

When students learned that Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and that between 500,000 and one million children cannot attend school because their families cannot afford the fees, they were determined to do something to help.

Their research brought them to Yelé Haiti Foundation, which provides scholarships for almost 7000 primary school children. Students immediately began campaigning to raise money to provide these children with a primary school education. Their primary fundraiser was through the sale of white silicone bracelets purchased from MakePovertyHistory.ca, the Canadian campaign to end poverty both in Canada and in developing countries.

In addition, a raffle with exciting prizes was organized and posters to support Haitian children were seen throughout the school.

Fundraising went beyond the school doors. One student raised $100 by selling lemonade for .25 a cup, just outside her home. Others went from class to class at Herzliah Beutel explaining the project and enlisting high school student support.

According to teacher Shelley Mann, “The aim of the Yelé Haiti project is to and to nurture our students’ desire to assist and support those less fortunate and to provide our students with a sense of responsibility and leadership.” (Source: United Talmud Torah)
