Council highligths
July 3rd session
The St. Laurent borough council chamber was unusually full during a July 3 public question period. The re-opening of Cavendish had drawn a large crowd, while mayor Alan DeSousa had answers for the public on every subject before moving on to the agenda.
Cavendish mobilizes protest
A number of residents came to the microphone to explain their dissatisfaction with the planned opening of Cavendish, which was announced by the city of Montreal in June. More details can be found further on in today's edition of the St. Laurent News.
Sewer contract tendered
A contract for the renovation of snow sewers and ice-refrigeration equipment at Raymond Bourque Arena was tendered at $10,450. An additional $100,000 in funding has been set aside to finance the project in the same place.
Park expansion
A $2.3-million contract was awarded to contractors Garnier Ltd. for the construction of sector 3A of Philippe-Laheurte Park and preparation for the third phase of the project.
Subsidies go out
The St. Laurent YMCA received a $104,000 subsidy to cover costs for the 2007-08 fiscal year, while the St. Laurent Womens' Centre received a $12,500 grant to fund a public-security project. In addition, $1,000 was granted to the St. Laurent branch of the Knights of Columbus to help fund that organization's 60th-anniversary celebration.
Public consultation on hedges
The borough's urban-planning consultative body deposited its recommendations on the height of hedges in St. Laurent. More than 50 residents weighed in on the possibility of raising the maximum height allowed from 1.80 metres to 2 metres. According to the report, council should allow the maximum height raised to that number.
