St. Laurent athletes clean up
The occasionally strong, but incessant, wind wasn't going to stop Lac St. Louis region runners from bringing home eight medals in their first day of Quebec Games competition Wednesday in Sept-Îles. St. Laurent athletes also contributed to the day's success with surprising performances in golf and cycling events.
Those impressive results vaulted Lac St. Louis five places in the medal standings, going from dead last in the first week of competition to 14th place with 13 podium finishes and counting.
Some bronze and some gold
In track and field, Lac St. Louis finished second among all 19 regions of Quebec in terms of total points after the first day of competition.
One of those eight medals belonged to St. Laurent sprinter Saraïna Jumelle-Kouakou, who finished third in the cadet 100M event. In cycling events, St. Laurent can be especially proud of its competitors; after coach Claude Pinard promised that his charges would win a medal; he was proved right – twice. His daughter, Anne-Sophie Pinard, brought home a bronze medal and Hugo Lemay brought home gold on the boys' side.
In the golf event, despite the rain, the wind and the bugs in the densely-forested course at the Sainte-Marguerite Golf Club in Sept-Îles, St. Laurent resident Gaby Balit shot to gold in the Stableford individual scoring event.
Disappointment in volleyball and swimming
Lac St. Louis athletes suffered disappointing performances on the volleyball court and in the pool. No swimmer finished better than seventh in individual events – Pierrefonds residents Kirby Coussa (50m freestyle) and Michael Mayer (200m butterfly) were the top finishers.
Despite the individual disappointment, the Lac St. Louis swim team managed to grab enough total points to come in fifth in the team competition out of the 19 delegations. But the expectations of 20 or more medals in swim events have been swept away by the storm that left few standing. In volleyball, the Lac St. Louis team lost all three of its matches on the day.

In softball, however, the Lac St. Louis girls' team blanked the Laurentides 8-0. St. Laurent athletes were a huge part of the medal haul, and at press time, that number was set to up. Keep following our website for more results as they come in.
