Facing the winter together
I just finished the article on the snow removal situation in the Saint-Laurent bourough (Ah comme la neige a... fait parler) [Nouvelles Saint-Laurent News issue of January 13].
The first paragraph mentions Charles Benchimol, a former counsellor of the city, starting the session by questionning why certain prioritized areas, i.e. the synagogue on Saint-Louis, was not on the top of the list. It is rather nice to see such a religious man living amongst us. I hope he will remember to pray for that single mother who needs to get to the metro so that she can be on time at her mininum wage job so she can feed her 5 children at home. How about that little old man at the old folks home waiting for that visit from his children but they have no way of getting to the entrance... Oh yes, there is also the schools, you know, the only place some low income family children have to get to because both parents have to work and cannot afford a sitter. But no, the synagogue is his priority.
I would also like to make honorable mention to those households that hire contractors for their snow removal. Hey, if you can afford it, why not? However, it would be nice that these same people instruct these goons to, first and foremost, show a little respect for the pedestrians. I cannot tell you how many times my dog and I almost got runover by one of these yahoos backing out of a driveway at 100mph in their fervor to be as fast as possible to get to as many houses as possible. After all, time is money. What is the life of a woman and her dog? Then, there is also this stacking up 6 feet of snow on the very same sidewalk that the city finally decided to clear... Way to go guys!
Un peu de savoir vivre and we can all face this winter together like people, not savages.
