The honours keep on piling up for the Cheetahs
The Vanier College AAA football team’s dream season is not over yet. A few weeks ago, the Cheetahs received multiple honours during a ceremony celebrating last year’s best performances in collegial football.
On December 18, quarterback Myles Gibbon was unanimously named the league’s most valuable player. In only his second college year, the 19-year old set a new record for the number of touchdown passes in a single season with 25. He also led quarterbacks in the number of yards gained on rushing plays and in passing yardage.
A member of the Cheetahs’ offensive line which allowed Gibbon to reach such high levels in 2007 was also rewarded for his remarkable season. Guard Matthew Norman was named best offensive line player by the league’s coaches. The 6 feet 4 inches (1.95 m) and 305 pounds (138 kg) blocking machine proved to be seemingly unmovable in his third college year.
The Cheetahs’ defensive squad was also honoured during the ceremony as linebacker Samaël Lavaud received the best defensive player award. Throughout the year, he was all-over the field with 71 tackles, 28 of those solo’s, five for lost of yardage and one quarterback sack.
As a team, the Cheetahs not only won sportsmanship award, but their coaching staff was named the league’s best. It was the sixth time and the second year in a row that the team’s won this honour. In four year with the Cheetahs, Coach Peter Chryssomalis led Vanier College to three Bol d’Or finals and two consecutive wins.
All-star team
With all those individual honours, it was to be expected that the Cheetahs would be well represented on the all-star team. In total, 11 Vanier College players are part of the league’s elite squadron.
Apart from the award winners named above, Laurentian Duraney White earned a spot on the all-star team. He’s joined by fellow team members Daryl Rankin, Ryan White, Christopher Campbell, Rémi Biakabutuka, Ameet Pall, Nathan Taylor and Stephan Osman.
