Vanier College Big Band Benefit Concert with Oliver Jones will honour Wah Keung Chan, founder of La Scena Musicale
This year when Vanier College strikes up the first note of its 10th Anniversary Big Band Benefit Concert, an annual event to raise funds for music scholarships, it will be in honour of Vanier graduate, Wah Keung Chan founding editor of La Scena Musicale a magazine that has become synonymous with knowing what’s happening in the world of music in Montreal.
Again this year, Jazz legend Oliver Jones will host the event which will feature the great scat singer Jeri Brown as guest artist. The first part of the evening will present the award-winning Vanier Stage Band made up of 19 young instrumentalists and singer Shaday Lavallé under the direction of Jocelyn Couture. In part two, Jeri Brown will take the spotlight along with conductor Christopher Smith and the J.L. Big Band, an ensemble of some of the best jazz musicians in Montreal.

Every year the Big Band Benefit Concert is dedicated to someone who has made an important contribution to music. According to Dr Nadia Turbide, Coordinator of the Music Department at Vanier, “This year we chose Wah Keung Chan, because his magazine which is distributed all over Montreal free of charge, is a one-of-a-kind monthly listing of musical events along with interviews and articles on musicians, conductors, and composers in Montreal. La Scena Musicale is a goldmine of information on musical events; no other local magazine covers music is such a comprehensive way.”

The stunning concert poster which appears in the March and April issues of La Scena Musicale, was designed by Rebecca De Comarmond, a student of Joan Fee Taylor in the Vanier Micropublishing and Hypermedia program.

Concert time is 7:30pm, Monday April 14th in the Vanier Auditorium (Room A150). Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Vanier College Print shop or at the door on the night of the concert. Open to the public.
