Summer programs
Shows take on a worldly flavour
After a lively Show-Chaud performance and the launch of the summer activity series by Belzébuth, summer is heating up. On the program: theatre, cinema, music and more. The world of music can be found in Saint-Laurent, in particular the Dominica Merola show, who knows how to put together French and Italian into lyrics and the way songs go with the piano.
The inaugural show on June 25 brought together nearly 300 people to Beaudet Park. Under the banner Traditional Québécois Music, the group offered much more by incorporating new sound technologies that led to an amazing outcome.
With the sound of violins, guitars and the accordion, the group set the stage for the start of the series of activities to come this summer. The month of July is here and already very diverse in programs.
On July 9, Marlborough Park will welcome singer and pianist Dominica Merola. French language music will be headlined along with some Italian. The artist, who is on her second album in collaboration with Luc Boivin, features a very fresh pop music by means of a pure and crafted voice. She enjoys playing with words and also appreciates Italian, including it in some of her compositions. “French and Italian are two very different languages when they are sung. For the first, the texts are very important. The words should be well said, insofar as a story is told. Italian is perfect for the high notes and allows for a greater range,” said the singer who not only appears at Montreal’s Maison de a culture, but performs at local French-speaking communities.
Her visit to Saint-Laurent will in fact be a return, since she already performed here three years ago, even before her first composition. This year’s show will be given at 7:30 p.m. and will be accompanied by a guitarist and a bass player.
Then, there will be a change in direction on July 16 when Yiddish music takes to the stage. Sonia Falkovitch will give a concert at Congregation Beth Ora (2600 Badeaux Street).
On July 30 Painter Park will feature a sports festival, which includes activities and the film Nim’s Island. An activity will follow between 3 and 11 p.m.
Lastly, for theatre fans, and in anticipation of the fall 2008 season, Le chat botté will be featured at Hartenstein Park on July 31, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Presented by Théâtre de la Roulotte, young and old will be able to discover or rediscover the famous tale of Charles Perrault. Do not forget to mark your agenda!
