Police beat of Oct. 29
Police stations welcome trick-or-treaters
Saint-Laurent's mini ghosts and goblins are invited to drop by the local police stations 6 (1761 Grenet) and 7 (780 Decarie) this Halloween where they can have make-up applied to their faces. Kids are also welcome to visit Painter Park on Oct. 31 as of 5 pm. Police, with the help of COSSL's youth committee, will be distributing candy and fluorescent necklaces, which children can wear to make them more visible as they prowl the streets of Saint-Laurent at night in search of treats.
Stolen computers
Police are continuing their investigation to trace the owners of a stash of computers discovered in a Ward Street apartment. The discovery was made last February during a routine verification of the building by firefighters after a fire. In all, 497 computers were recovered, as well as some 600 computer accessories. The occupant of the apartment was later arrested and charged with receiving stolen goods. To date, 134 items have been confirmed stolen, as investigators at the north end police operations centre on Thimens their tracing efforts. The computers appear to have been stolen during a number of break-ins in homes and schools in the Montreal area between 2000 and 2005.
$500,000 in capacitors stolen
No fewer than 56 capacitors were stolen from a storage unit located on the Trans-Canada Highway. The theft, estimated at some $500,000, was reported on Oct. 14 at 11 am. Suspects forced their way through a garage door to access surplus merchandise that had been stored there for two months. The thieves made off with the 56 capacitors, some of which had compressors. A dozen other capacitors were stripped of their copper finish. Police believe that the perpetrators must have used a 45 ft trailer to carry out their crime. There were no surveillance cameras on site and no witnesses have come forward.
Train station safety
A collaborative effort between police and CN to raise safety awareness around commuter train stations took place Oct. 18 and 19 between 7:30 am and 10 am at the Du Ruisseau and Bois-Franc stations. Some 650 pamphlets with safety information were distributed commuters.
BBQ thief arrested
A Saint-Laurent resident was arrested after having been nabbed stealing a BBQ on Oct. 13 between 1:30 pm and 1:45 pm. Police were alerted by a woman who saw a suspicious looking person prowling around her neighbour's house. Her description allowed police to identify the man, who was spotted pushing the BBQ along Abbott Street, near Badeaux. The suspect attempted to run off as soon as he caught sight of police, but was caught a short time later. The 31-year-old suspect already possesses a long police record.
