The Vanier College Lady Cheetahs Basketball after their victory.
The Vanier College Lady Cheetahs bring home Gold.
In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Lady Basketball Cheetahs won Vanier College's first ever Women's National AAA Basketball Championships and brought home the Gold Medal on Saturday March 17. During the nail-biting intensive final match, the Lady Cheetahs defeated an extremely tough team from Collège Édouard-Montpetit 82-80 at McEwan College in Edmonton and brought to a fitting close the extraordinary season of a team with indomitable spirit.
Trailing by 14 points at one point in the second quarter, the Cheetahs fought back and reduced the deficit to only 4 points at the end of the 3rd quarter and fought off the tenacious Lynx in the last seconds of the game to earn the national crown. It proved a fitting conclusion to a fairy tale season that saw the Lady Cheetahs take a well-earned #1 national ranking from the regular season to go on to win Vanier's first ever Provincial championship and then complete the run by capturing the ultimate prize: the CCAA National Women's Basketball Championship.
The last moments of play were incredibly tense with two out-of-bounds plays in the last 17 seconds - one each way. With the opposing team missing two foul shots with five seconds left, the final score of 82 - 80 left Vanier jumping off the bench in the gold medal victory.
Congratulations go out to the Lady Cheetahs and to coaches Ruby Viray, Tina Fasone and Mai-Anh Nguyen for an amazingly gutsy victory. After such a heart-stopping see-saw battle, Vanier can finally start breathing again!
