Science Brings Gold to Deguire Street
Saint-Laurent resident Robert Aboukhalil, a student of Marianopolis College, has brought home a gold medal from the 25th Bell Montreal Regional Science & Technology fair, which took place from April 1 to 3.
The team of Aboukhalil and Daisy Daivasagaya won the award for their Quantum Dots & Cancer Labelling exhibit, which they will take to the provincial science fair later in April. As Aboukhalil explains, “The goal of our project was to propose a way to label cancer cells at an earlier stage using quantum dots. The dots are sent into the body where they are attracted to cancer cells. Since the dots are fluorescent, an X-ray of the person would determine where cancer cells are the most concentrated.”

The winners also received the Genome Quebec Bursary and the McGill University Biology Award. The pair will graduate next month, and plan to study at McGill this September. (Source: Marianapolis College)
