St. Laurent athletes shine in second round
Thanks to a record number of athleticism points in Quebec Games history, the Lac St. Louis region walked away with a seventh title, ironically in Sept-Îles! The athletes from St. Laurent also gained their gold in golf and cycling.
Winning 44 medals in athleticism also helped Lac St. Louis finish the Quebec Games in fourth place out of all 19 regions. All sports included, Lac St. Louis finished with 54 medals, 16 of which were gold, 18 silver and 20 bronze.

Lac St. Louis’ athletic conquest was no easy feat: it actually only came true on the last day of competition.

The challenge of carrying on a tradition of excellence and keeping a team made up of athletes from five different clubs united was a tough one. But St. Laurent sent some excellent competitors. Saraïna Jumelle-Kouakou walked away with two bronze medals in the cadet-level 100m and 200m. She was also part of the team that won the gold in the cadel-level 4 x 400m, as well as the team that clenched silver in the girls mixed cadet-level relay.

As for Nabil Akalach, he wore silver around his neck after the boys’ juvenile-level 4 x 400m.
Golf, cycling, and swimming
Thanks especially to the girls, the team walked away with four medals in golf.

Notably, Gaby Balit of St. Laurent won triple-gold medals, after scoring a 74 in her individual round. She also beat all of her opponents in stableford scoring. Her exceptional performances won her a $150 gift certificate to a sports store, and gained her a spot in the Jouez gagnant mentor pairing program.

In cycling, the region obtained two medals, one of which was gold. “We have a young team that hasn’t quite reached its full potential yet, so the results are very satisfying and even better in terms of medals,” said Jacques Chapdelaine, head of the Lac St. Louis delegation.

The team of 28 swimmers was only able to win one medal, which is well below Lac St. Louis standards in the sport. However, the team still finished fifth in points among all the regions.
Looking forward to 2010
Jacques Chapdelaine believes it would have been difficult to do better with the team they had this year. “We were stronger than in Amos in the 12 sports we competed in. For the 2010 Games, we’re working towards having teams in the sports we were absent in this year.”

The next Quebec Games will be held in winter 2009 in Blainville, Ste. Thérèse and Rosemère. The location for the next summer Games in 2010 will be decided in November. Vaudreuil-Dorion is one of the finalists to host the event.
