The Cheetahs are ballin’
The basketball season at Vanier College is well underway and the school’s women and men AAA teams are having a pretty good season start with records of 6-1 and 3-2 respectively. On November 16, they took part in a doubleheader at Édouard-Montpetit.
In the first game, the number 1 ranked team in Canada could never get things going, trailing 19-10 after the first quarter and 33-23 at the half, and finally losing its first game by a score of 61-52. Injuries finally caught up to the team, which remains in first place. They have been playing with only eight players for most of the first semester.
For awhile, it looked like the hosts would sweep the doubleheader, as the AAA men came out very flat in the nightcap, trailing 19-4 to start the game, by 23 (38-13) in the second quarter and by 21 (51-30) early in the third quarter. However, Vanier mounted a furious comeback in the second half, taking the lead with just over a minute left in the game and finally winning 73-69.
Both teams are back in action this Sunday at home against John Abbott. The women’s game is at 1:00 p.m. and the men play at 3:00 p.m. Another home doubleheader is scheduled on November 28 against Ahuntsic. Game time is at 6:30 p.m. for the women while the men start at 8:30 p.m.
Fresh off a Bol d’Or victory on the football field, St. Laurent’s own Duraney White should rejoin the men’s AAA basketball team for Sunday’s game.
