Snowstorm doesn't stop borough council
Most people will remember this year’s December 4 because of the snowstorm, but on this day, there was also the monthly borough council meeting. At that occasion, a good number of public calls for tenders and contracts were awarded. A three-year action plan for the equality of access to employment of the borough was adopted and the bimonthly police reports were handed in.
Toupin…yet again
During the public question period, two citizens once again brought up the issue of the Cavendish boulevard opening and its repercussions on the Toupin boulevard neighbourhood. One of them mentioned that it was difficult getting out of her house’s parking spot because there’s too much traffic. She asked for more police presence. “We’re waiting for Techsult [transports consultation firm] to hand in its report before making any decision and it won’t be available until next summer. In the meantime, we ordered studies for specific areas to see if we could do something sooner,” answered borough Mayor Alan DeSousa.
Blooming contracts
Various contracts were awarded during the council meeting. Three of those concerned computer equipment and maintenance for a total of near $100,000. Even with all the snow piling up, it’s almost time to plant new flowers. Therefore, $38,363 was awarded for the supply and delivery of annual flowers which will be planted starting January.
St. Laurent and the seven community organizations
A contribution of $181,657 was granted by the council to seven community organizations in order to fight poverty and social exclusion. The money will be shared between the CARI St-Laurent, the Centre des femmes, Rap-Jeunesse, the Maison des jeunes, the Centre l'unité, the YMCA and the COSSL.
Acting mayor
Councillor Patricia Bittar was named pro-mayor for a four-month period starting January 1st.
Happy New Year
The first 2008 council meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8 instead of being held on the first Tuesday of the month, which lands on January 1st.
Follow-up
Following the council meeting, Mayor DeSousa gave the St. Laurent News some more details about the Cavendish Boulevard opening. The plan published in last weeks paper is definitive. The forced left and right turns will come into effect. The mayor assured observers the configuration will be permanent because of the curved-shape road paths that are going to be connected to Henri-Bourassa Boulevard. The only other thing that is not yet set in stone is the way traffic will be regulated in the Gouin/Toupin area.
