More than 250 people took to the streets and parks of Cartierville last Sunday for the Course de la Santé, which helped raise $13,500 for research into cardiovascular diseases.
Organized by the Sacré-Coeur Hospital Foundation, the event, now in its third year, aims to make hospital staff, doctors and the adjacent population more aware about the benefits of getting regular physical activity.
Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the top causes of death among Canadian adults. A sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, poor nutrition and too much stress are often cited as contributing factors.
"A good way to introduce physical activity into your daily routine is to walk or run short distances," said honorary president and Sacré-Coeur employee Yves Beauchamp, who is also a an elite athlete in his own right.
A hospital orderly, Beauchamp also ranks among the worlds top long-distance triathletes. "I decided to take part in the race for the fun of it, but also to set an example," he said.
The day's activities included both walking and running events, which took place on city streets, as well as Raimbault and Beauséjour Parks.
Organizers could count on the help of some 50 volunteers who worked to ensure that the day unfolded smoothly. In addition to taking part in the events, Sacré-Coeur's cardiologists also gave out personalized cardiovascular reports to each participant. The respirologists, who had set up an information kiosk, answered questions about respiratory and pulmonary health.
Proceeds from the race will go toward the opening of a new coronary care unit at the hospital, which will house patients requiring care for cardiovascular illnesses. Contributions from the public are accepted. Call 514-338-2303 for more information. Translated by Anna Bratulic
