Hands off Park Avenue
Dear Mr. DeSousa,
We read that Montreal's Executive Committee, of which you are a member, was unanimous<@$p> in its decision to rename Park Avenue to Robert Bourassa Avenue. Or, was it a unilateral<@$p> decision by Mayor Gérald Tremblay with the rest of the executive committee simply bowing to his wishes?
Whatever the case, this is objectionable on several levels. First, it appears that no executive committee member thought it important enough to warrant consultation with the people who will be directly impacted, financially and otherwise. With taxes soaring, merchants and commercial establishments should not have additional expenses imposed on them by you for various forms of signage (e.g. awnings), letterhead, business cards, etc. Nor should taxpayers in general have to bear the unnecessary expense for new street signs.
It is also glaringly obvious you didn't think that input from your fellow councillors deserved any consideration either.
As usual with the Tremblay administration, we expect that this is a fait accompli, and you will impose your wishes upon the population you are supposed to be representing. However, it would have been more respectful to consider the history you are erasing and the impact upon the residents and merchants. It's hard to believe how incredibly inconsiderate you have all acted.
Alan, how is it possible that you are comfortable endorsing and voting in favor of honouring a man who, back in 1974, enacted Bill 22-and subsequently proudly announced that "we have suspended fundamental liberties"? Have you forgotten that this is the same man who in 1988, introduced Bill 178 and invoked the notwithstanding clause that would see the continuation of restricting the use and visibility of English? We thought you were a strong federalist because in the spring of 1997, back when you were an opposition councillor for the City of Saint-Laurent, you actively encouraged and participated in the efforts of our group, Saint-Laurent Citizens For Canadian Unity, in the successful passing of the unity resolution by our council members.
We hope you will give serious thought to withdrawing your support and voting against this street's name change on Oct. 30.
