Peewee B Flyers come close
Two Saint-Laurent teams that made it to the finals at the 16th Interregional Hockey Tournament, held January 12 to 21 at the Raymond-Bourque Arena, saw their dream to become title holders vanish.
Last Sunday morning, the Saint-Laurent Rockets were dominated 6-0 by the West Island Knights in the Atom B final. In the afternoon, the Saint-Laurent Flyers saw their hopes disappear to become Peewee B champions after a 2-1 win by the Saint-Hubert Jets.
Rockets fall short of the Atom B title
A good atmosphere, frank friendship and camaraderie prevailed on both sides: Sunday was the day for the best teams of the week. The finals could begin. Parents and friends came out in great number to support their preferred team. "We will win, that is for sure," said a group of young players before jumping on the ice prior to the Atom B finals that were high in emotions.
Local players faced quality adversaries, eliminating the Saint-Laurent Torpedos in the other semi-final. James Cefis and Nicolas Van Aelst started the scoring for the Knights in the first period. Then, the West Island team pulled ahead in the second period, with goals from Mosha Moreau-Côté and James Cefis, his second. The end of the match was no longer in any doubt. The final tally: The Knights would be victorious with a final score 6-0 against the Rockets.

The Saint-Laurent team played well up until the finals, with four consecutive wins.
Flyers fight until the end
The second final, in the Peewee B category, was closer and spectators got to see a faster hockey game. Robert-Joe Houjeily of the Saint-Laurent Flyers started the scoring after only 24 seconds of play, which brought joy to the fans who were massed behind the team bench. The Jets came back at 6:50 into the first period in a two on one. At the end of the first period it was a 1-1 tie.
The match grew in intensity at the beginning of the second period, whereas the best scorer for the Flyers, Robert-Joe Houjeily, was taken to task following the referee’s whistle. As a result he got a five-minute penalty and a game suspension. Quickly, the game turned to the advantage of the Jets. Louis Ménard increased the advance of the rivals with a score of 2-1.

Between the two periods, the refereeing was called into question. Some parents of the young hockey players from the Flyers, including Jim and Dimitra Roumeliotis, felt that "the referee lost control of the match." Despite everything, the game remained close in the third period and spectators watched with interest. No goal was scored in the third period as victory for the Jets came with a final 2-1 score. The Flyers came close.

Seven Saint-Laurent teams qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament, but only two made it to the finals. In short, the 16th edition, was called a success and as the Saint-Laurent Minor Hockey Association President Lawrence Mammas emphasized: "Until we meet next year!" (Translated by Michael Beigleman)
"We will win, that is for sure."
